TRC was started in 1998 by Dave Hetland and Kristen Machado. Dave was a 20 year member of the Merced Track Club when he moved to Turlock. Having read a Turlock Journal article profiling Kristen, and missing the camaraderie of a running club, Dave contacted Kristen about the possibility of starting a club in Turlock.
A notice was placed in the Modesto Bee and the first meeting was held at Emmanuel Medical Center on November 5th, 1998. The first club run was on November 15th, 1998 starting at the CSUS track and covering 5 miles. Over the next few months a planning committee was formed, a logo designed and membership grew to approximately 25 runners.
In 1999, Turlock Running Club grep to over 40 members and a team ran the Providian Relay. On November 6, 1999, TRC celebrated its first year with a first (annual) banquet.
